WHAT I DID
This project aims to develop an AI-driven customized cover letter generator for healthcare professionals, including but not limited to Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Physician Assistants, etc. Here is what I contributed:
Created detailed wireframes
Crafted high-fidelity interactive prototypes
Generated user test script and analyzed testing results
Presented prototype to stakeholders, and company wide employee resource group
What's the problem?
Every time we subscribe to a new service or sign up for a free trial, we rely on a personal tracker, or our oh-so-forgetful memory to keep track of them.
Healthcare job seekers often struggle to write personalized and effective cover letters when applying for jobs.
How might we create a system in which we can better manage all our subscriptions, without missing a single renewal date?

Overview
Overview
What is the issue?
During the pandemic, services with a subscription fee model have seen a major increase in sales. It's becoming difficult to keep track of all of the services out there!
The healthcare industry needs an automated solution for crafting customized cover letters.
Keeping track of everything that we have subscribed to every month is becoming a hassle. It's so difficult to know the exact date of renewals or even unsubscribe from them! Users are tired of putting in a dispute when they miss the end date of their free trials. As someone who has a very weak system for keeping track of free trials, I decided to create a system to make it easier for users to manage their subscriptions.
The healthcare industry needs an automated solution for crafting customized cover letters.
What's going on with the user? What do they want to do?
As a subscriber who uses many subscription services and often uses free trials, I want to be alerted when my subscription is almost up, so that I do not have to be paying for a service I no longer use or forgot about.
The healthcare industry needs an automated solution for crafting customized cover letters.
I started out with primary research
I started out with primary research
First, I created a survey to see what kinds of problems users face and the methods people use while managing several subscription services. I conducted a Google forms survey on 40 different respondents (most in the 18-34 age range) to understand the types of issues that people faced when managing their subscriptions.
Many of the respondents often faced issues with an overextension of their subscriptions and didn't have a method in place to solve them.

The bigger the word, the more popular the subscription service. The most popular subscriptions are for Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify, Hulu, Adobe.
Integration with Gen-AI
Generative AI was utilized in this product to enhance the personalization and efficiency of creating tailored cover letters. By leveraging advanced AI technologies, the system can generate highly relevant, customized content that aligns with the job seeker's resume and the specific job posting.
Survey statistics
Nearly 75% of respondents stated that they have been charged unwillingly for a subscription service.
80% stated that they do not keep track of their current subscriptions.
Something interesting I found while reviewing the survey responses were the number of people who commented on the difficulty of unsubscribing from a service.

(Taken from the survey results) This is an example of dark UI patterns that ultimately make it more difficult for the user to opt out of a service, which is something I resolved to fix in my solution.
A summary of my primary research, condensed into two personas:

Creating the Design
Let's see what other solutions already exist in the iOS App Store.

Creating the Design
What's going on with people's subscriptions?
l discovered that a lot of respondents face many problems with billing and renewal dates, and that a majority (80%) of respondents stated that they do not currently have a method to keep track of their subscriptions.
Based on my user research, these are the desired outcomes or most common wishes:
✧ Keep an eye on the date the service ends
✧ Be alerted when the subscription ends soon
✧ Does not have to go digging for the end-of-subscription date
✧ Solution is easy to find/use
Creating the Design
Let's come up with some helpful solutions.
Based on the survey responses, people's recommendations, and the competitor analysis, a subscription tracker app is the best way to manage one's subscriptions, to receive automatic notifications and to sync it with one's calendar. These were some of the design solutions that I had brainstormed:
✧ Sync with bank account
✧ Sends reminders or calendar events to phone
✧ Easily set up subscriptions not already in bank account, such as free trials
✧ Collaborate with other users/household payments
✧ A tab that tracks other recurring finances like rent, utilities, car insurance
✧ Shows last used, or how often someone uses each one
l discovered that a lot of respondents face many problems with billing and renewal dates, and that a majority (80%) of respondents stated that they do not currently have a method to keep track of their subscriptions.
Creating the Design
As a result, I chose to create a mobile-based solution for faster reminders.
Creating the Design

A user flow diagram to map out the most integral pieces of the solution.
Let's put some structure to these ideas.
Based on the user flow, I created a low-fidelity wireframe consisting of 8 different screens to visualize my design solutions.

Sketches to showcase each user touchpoint with the app
Creating the Design
Then, I turned them into medium-fidelity wireframes to create the app's structure.

For a first-time user, they have the option to go through the process of linking their bank account in order to extract any subscriptions already subscribed onto the app.

Homepage
An all-in-one space to track upcoming subscription renewal dates.

My Subscriptions
To see how far along the user is in this payment cycle.

Individual Subscription
"How often do I use this service?" This screen helps the user evaluate whether to continue or discontinue the subscription.

Subscription Selector
This is a manual option to account for services that may not show up in one's bank account, such as a free trial.

Plan Selection
Theoretically, the application would update the various types of subscriptions available for one service. The feasibility, however, needs to be tested.

Sharing
Although this screen did not make it to the final prototype recording, its purpose was to show the user's payment contributions, as well as their partner's contributions.

Reminders
The user can opt in to in-app reminders or create an event to put into their calendar, as an extra measure of precaution.
Creating the Design
The components I used in my designs:

Creating the Design
I worked with the UX lead to run an unmoderated user test on my high-fidelity prototype with 10 participants who were Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses, Obstetrician, and Nurse Practitioners, with job experiences of up to 20 years of experience.
User Test Questions:
What are the participant’s comfort levels and experiences with AI generators?
Do all the options currently provided in the cover letter generator make sense to job seekers and address their needs?
How would participants interact with the generator? Does it work as expected? What are some things they are satisfied with, and what do they dislike?
Testing Method
User Testing
Key Insights
Insight 1
Participants find the cover letter generator intuitive and a valuable starting point for their job applications.
Implementation
No design changes were made at this stage. Rather, this helped us understand the product's effectiveness in addressing the original challenge of crafting personalized cover letters.
Insight 2
The value of the AI generator is unclear in how it might aid the job seeker's application process.
Implementation
No design changes were made at this stage. However, this feedback informed our efforts to enhance user understanding of the AI-driven features in future iterations of the product.

Post-Release Results
After the product was released, I conducted another unmoderated user test to gather evaluative user testing findings from healthcare professionals post-release. Because this was towards the end of my contract, I made the following recommendations for the next designer to iterate on my design:
Finding 1
There is a misunderstanding of the purpose of the cover letter generator, which is to tailor one’s cover letter to a specific job posting.
Recommendation:
Add a line of instructions telling users to copy and paste job information from a real job posting they are interested in.
Finding 2
Participants want to be able to include personalized options within their generated cover letters.
Recommendation:
Add an input box allowing users to highlight specific qualities that they believe are important to include in the generated cover letter.
Reflection
Designing with generative artificial intelligence involves understanding the technical system before starting any design work.
This approach helped me align my design approach with the system's capabilities and limitations.
I learned how to discern valuable feedback, prioritize findings, and transform interview findings into actionable changes,
I gained hands-on experience with conducting user research, through crafting test scripts, analyzing interviews, and synthesizing interviews. Utilizing supporting clips from testers was a valuable way to strengthen my design changes and recommendations.
A challenge I faced was finding the right balance between automation and personalization.
It was important to give users the ability to gain ownership over their work, while taking advantage of the abilities of AI. To address this, I added customizing features to tailor each cover letter to individual experiences.
Presenting and convincing others about the importance of the product is also equally as important as creating the design.
I refined my ability to articulate design rationale and advocate for user needs within a cross-functional team when meeting with Product leads and Developers. By presenting my project progress at a company-wide UX working group meeting, which was created to bring UX teams together across the various subsidiaries at Everyday Health Group. A screenshot of my presentation is shown below!

If I had enough time to continue working on this project, I would…
Track metrics such as time on task and conversion rates to identify areas for design improvements in the next iteration
Conduct a longitudinal study to see the correlation between generated cover letters and hiring rates
Looking back…
What I learned:
This case study helped me learn and hone my design-thinking skills.
I asked for general feedback in my survey questions and it was very helpful to receive tips on improving my survey by asking more neutral questions.
I learned how to use a prototyping tool, Figma, for the first time through a lot of trial and error. It was VERY exciting to hit play and see my designs come to life! 😄
